Fun at the Shell Museum

Shell Museum

The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum is a busy place in the summer, with many activities directed to visiting families. The museum is open seven days a week and offers a different program daily in its “New Day, New Adventure” series. In addition, there are live Tank Talks, and Shell Arts & Crafts in the afternoons. The museum is also offering guided Beach Walks for visitors to learn about the most commonly found shells on our beaches.

Making these activities more affordable is a discount being offered to summer visitors, a buy-one, get one half off on every admission and beach walk. Regular admission prices are $15 for adults, $9 for ages 12 – 17 and $7 for 5 – 11. Children aged 5 and under are admitted free. The Museum is open from 10 until 5 and is located at 3075 Sanibel Captiva Road.

The live Tank Talks are held four times a day, at 11:00, 12:30, 2:30 and 4. In addition to discussing live mollusks, presenters talk about Florida’s live shelling ban.

Beach Walks are led by the museum’s shell experts and take visitors on one-hour walks starting at 9:00 am daily from the Island Inn at 3111 West Gulf Drive. Advanced registration is required and the walks are open to 6 people at a time. Beach Walks prices are the same as admission costs, and registration is available by telephone at (239) 395-2233 or at www.shellmuseum.org.

The Shell Museum is a wonderful resource to have right here in our community. It offers visitors a chance to learn more about the beach and to have a better appreciation of the shells. The museum has something for everyone during the summer and is a not-to-be-missed activity for all visitors to Sanibel.

Sincerely,

The Sandalfoot Team

Fourth of July on Sanibel!

Sanibel Island knows how to do an old-fashioned Fourth of July, with celebrations that begin with a pancake breakfast and end with fireworks over San Carlos Bay.

The day begins with a free pancake breakfast served at the Sanibel Community Church from 7:00 until 9:00 am. Breakfast includes hot cakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice and coffee. The church is located at 1740 Periwinkle Way. Although free-of-charge, donations will gladly be accepted to benefit the Summit Christian Preschool. Breakfast guests are invited to stay for the parade that begins at 9:30. There will be shaded seating as well as cold drinks.

This year’s 4th of July Parade, themed “Wild About America,” begins at 9:30 from Bailey’s (Periwinkle and Tarpon Bay Road) and ends at Jerry’s (Periwinkle and Casa Ybel Road). Jerry’s is located at 1700 Periwinkle Way, and will also host a 4th of July celebration that begins at 10:30.

The San-Cap Optimist Club is holding its 39th annual Road Rally on July 4th. Like an “automobile scavenger hunt,” the race begins at noon from the Timbers parking lot at 703 Tarpon Bay Road. Registration forms can be obtained at www.sancapoptimist.org.

The highlight of the day is the much-anticipated fireworks display that is sponsored by the City of Sanibel. The fireworks begin at 9:00 pm above the Sanibel Causeway and the event will be held rain or shine.

For a unique and memorable 4th of July, consider a cruise with Adventures in Paradise and join them on their annual 4th of July Cruise. It lasts approximately two hours, leaving the “G” dock at Sanibel Marina at 7:30 and returning around 9:30. Complimentary soft drinks, bottled water and snacks are served on the cruise. Call 239-472-8443 for more information or to book. The cost is $59 per person for an outstanding and memorable event.

Happy 4th of July to all from Sandalfoot!

Sincerely,

The Sandalfoot Team

National Seashell Day is Back!

Mark your calendars for June 21st when southwest Florida will be celebrating National Seashell Day! It promises to be a great start to summer and an event is planned on Fort Myers Beach that will rock the seashells that Sanibel, Captiva and Fort Myers Beach are known for.

Fort Myers Beach will host a Guinness World Record title attempt for the largest human image of a seashell. Sponsored by the Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau, the attempt will hope to attract 1,000+ people (the current record is held by Shell Oil Company with 855 participants.)

“Summer’s here and we’re going to celebrate by creating a human seashell of epic proportions” says Tamara Pigott, VCB Executive Director. “With the help of our community, we look forward to attempting a Guinness World Record title.” An adjudicator from Guinness will be on site to verify the attempt.

Participants are asked to meet on the beach behind The Outrigger Beach Resort located at 6200 Estero Boulevard. The event will be held rain or shine and registration is at the Tiki Hut at the Outrigger between 6:30 and 8:30 am. This fun event will run until 11:30 am.

All who take part will receive a 2018 commemorative National Seashell Day t-shirt and hat, as well as complimentary water, fresh fruit, snacks, entertainment and tent seating for shade. Participants are asked to bring refillable water bottles for the water stations.

Although there is no parking on site, trolleys will ferry people to and from the event. Trolleys will run every 10 – 15 minutes from Fort Myers Beach Park & Ride, 11101 Summerlin Square Road, and from Lovers Key State Park, 8700 Estero Boulevard, east side.

To register for the National Seashell Day event, go to www.leevcb.com/events/2018-national-seashell-day. Registration is necessary to receive a t-shirt and a free bus pass. Help bring the Guinness World Record to the seashell capital of the world!

Sincerely,

The Sandalfoot Team

Sanibel Makes Top Vacation List!

Sanibel Makes Expedia’s List of Top Vacation Destinations in North America

What so many of you know is now confirmed – Sanibel is a top vacation destination, based on reviews posted by Expedia travelers in 2017. “Top-Rated Vacation Destinations in North America” is posted on Expedia Viewfinder travel blog, the second annual list of the top 50.

Travelers posted reviews of more than 4,600 travel destinations and Sanibel was ranked number 15, just behind another popular Florida destination, Key West. This year also marks Sanibel’s first appearance on the list. The top destinations received at least 600 reviews and are listed in order of the highest reviewed. The number one spot went to Wailea, Hawaii.

What did visitors like about Sanibel? Among the top-rated activities were shelling, enjoying the peacefulness of the island and all the wildlife, plus eating at its many restaurants and enjoying the local seafood.

John Lai, president of the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce commented on our island’s ranking. “To be one of only two Florida destinations chosen is quite an honor. We have consistently offered world-class beaches, shelling, shopping, biking, fishing and dining, but our sustainable initiatives and undisturbed natural environment are truly what sets us apart.”

Sandalfoot guests who have been coming here for years know all about Sanibel’s uniqueness and what a great vacation spot it is for people of all ages. If you haven’t visited Sanibel, and Sandalfoot, give our island a try and let this magical place become your most memorable vacation.

To see the full list of 50 top-rated vacation destinations, go to https://viewfinder.expedia.com.

Sincerely,

The Sandalfoot Team

It’s Turtle Time!

May 1st marked an exiting time on Sanibel and Captiva – the official start to sea turtle nesting season. From early May until the end of October, volunteers comb the beaches for evidence of new turtle nesting sites.

Sea turtles are among the world’s oldest creatures and a mature sea turtle can live up to 50 years. Sanibel and Captiva provide a perfect nesting habitat and in 2017, 684 nests were laid on Sanibel and 189 nests were laid on Captiva. Last year was the fourth year in a row to break nesting records and hopes are high that 2018 will again see an increase in the number of nests over last year.

Primarily it is the loggerhead and green turtle species that nest on Sanibel and Captiva. This year, however, it was the rarer Kemp’s Ridley turtle that created the first nest on Sanibel. The Kemp’s Ridley is one of the smallest of the sea turtles and is also among the most endangered. As of May 4th, seven nests have been located on the islands, six Loggerhead and the Kemp’s Ridley.

Sea turtle nesting sites are now a familiar site on area beaches. The nests are marked off with yellow tape and have a protective wire mesh barrier on top to keep the eggs safe from predators. Visitors and resident alike can contribute to the success of the sea turtle nesting program. The most important thing is keeping the beach dark so the hatchings are attracted to the light reflected off the water and swim in the direction of the sea. Artificial light disorients the hatchings and those that crawl in the wrong direction won’t survive.

Everyone is asked to close curtains or blinds after dark and make sure to leave the beach turtle-friendly – no beach equipment or large holes that could stand in the way of the turtles making it to the Gulf. And please, no flash photography or cell phone lights on the beach after dark. In 1992, SCCF began recording nesting statistics and hundreds of volunteers every year monitor the beach for nests or evidence of hatchlings making their way to the water. Remember, the darker the beach, the brighter their future.

Sincerely,

The Sandalfoot Team
