Two of “our own” committed to volunteering on Sanibel
Sandalfoot owners Jack and Engrid “Inky” Meng are committed to helping others and do so by volunteering with F.I.S.H., a non-profit, human services organization based here on Sanibel. They learned of F.I.S.H. at their local church, Sanibel Congregational Church of Christ. The group’s moniker indicates its focus: Food Programs; Island Based Workshops; Social Services; and Helping Hands.
“F.I.S.H. is more than just a food pantry. There are more than 40 different programs to meet the multiple and complex needs of over 2,100 neighbors on our island,” commented Jack.
Inky and Jack volunteer their time in diverse ways.
“Jack is a driver and feels that he is helpful when he drives men and women who need their medical treatments done off island,” explains Inky. “I like working in the walk-in center, where I assist those participating in the food pantry program. Often, the recipients tell how they work here on the island yet have difficulties during off-season making ends meet. They are thankful for the temporary assistance from F.I.S.H.”
Inky also says she likes making “reassurance phone calls” to people living alone to check on how they are doing and add cheerful conversation to their day. The backpack program is also very important to Inky; it provides children with a selection of food on Friday afternoon that they can easily prepare and enjoy over the weekend while a parent is working.
