The Sanibel Library continually offers special programs that bring interesting and informative presentations to the Island. This time the special program is for kids of all ages, and it is taking place at the Library on Tuesday afternoon, June 28th, from 3:00 until 4:00 pm.
Taiko refers to a Japanese percussion instrument, but it also refers to a form of performance, taiko drumming. Taiko literally means big, fat drum, although there are different styles. The taiko drum body and skin can take several years to create.
Tampa Taiko is a professional drumming ensemble that presents programs for a variety of audiences and occasions. Presentations at libraries are among the many programs they present, but others include festivals, concert halls, schools, retirement centers, summer camps, corporate and VIP events.
The Sanibel Library will feature an interactive program that covers the history of taiko, drum music of Japan, modern drumming performance and drum-making using discarded barrels that have been recycled into drums. Participants even get some hands-on time on the drums!
The program is for kids of all ages and there is no charge to attend. Residents and visitors are cordially invited. The Library is located at 770 Dunlop Road.
