Sanibel Sea School Walks
Whether you’ve been visiting here for years and are well versed in the sea life here, or are new to the island and all it offers, the Sanibel Sea School has informative guided walks for all who are intrigued by the island’s marine life.
The Sea School has expanded its education programs for the public, and now offer informational programs for adults every week.
A bird walk is offered from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and a shell walk takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays all year long. The walks, based out of the Sea School’s campus at 455 Periwinkle Way, are added to the School’s programs offering Tuesday walks at South Seas Island Resort on Captiva and Wednesday walks at Sundial Beach Resort on Sanibel.
The shell walk is a two-hour session to provide the Sanibel Sea School staff with opportunity to thoroughly discuss shell biology. Director of Development Nicole Finnicum explained that the course “is an overall basic identification course for people of all ages. It’s good for all levels, whether they are beginning shellers or whether they are avid shellers.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own shell bags to the walks; the Sea School also sells them.
The bird walk discusses shore birds, pelicans, osprey, and other local birds. Walkers will spend time inland before making their way out to the beach. The Sea School offers binocular rentals.
