A Typical Sanibel Sunday!
The Sanibel-Captiva Art League held a popular free event on Sunday, March 15th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m – the Annual Clothesline Art Show. It is exactly as it is called, colorful art pinned to clothesline, strung from pole to pole behind the Sanibel Community House. Many artists were exhibiting their plein air paintings, or works that are painted outdoors. The artists, very approachable and very happy to talk about their art, explained that painting outdoors is very different. The light is more subtle and the color transitions happen more quickly, making painting on the beach or near other Sanibel landmarks an experience that is different each time.
Artists offer a large selection of first-rate artworks at affordable prices. The works include collage, watercolor, oil, pastel, acrylic and colored pencil in a variety of subjects and sizes. The great majority of the art is original, and prices are most often heavily discounted. This is a very popular and well-attended event on the island.
