Sanibel Island is known for its 25 miles of paved bike trails, and it is still the best way to get out and see the Island. It is no surprise then that the Sanibel Bike Club is also popular. In addition to a membership of enthusiastic cyclists, the club is also an award winner in the state of Florida. The Sanibel Club was recently named the Florida Bicycle Association’s Club of the Year for 2015. The club previously won the award in 2011.
The Sanibel Bike Club has over 250 members and new members are always welcome. All skill levels are welcome too. Florida law requires that children 15 and under must wear a helmet. Children and adults must wear a helmet if riding with the bike club. Members ride every Wednesday morning at 11:00 am and Saturdays at 7:30 am, and meet at the Community Park on Periwinkle. The club also does off-island trips. April 18-19 is the club’s last outing, and members will be touring Hutchinson Island. In addition to bike outings, the club also has social events throughout the season.
The Sanibel Bike Club has recently released a safety video, which was produced in conjunction with the City of Sanibel, to help visitors and residents alike ride safely on the shared use path. Called Cycling on Sanibel, the video covers Experiencing Sanibel by Bike, The Sanibel Shared Use Path, Bike Safely – Follow the Rules, Sanibel’s Unique Cycling Conditions, and Enjoy Your Ride.
Not only is the video a great resource for Sanibel bikers, but it also serves as a model for the Florida Bicycle Association and the state of Florida to create safety videos for other bicycling areas in the state.
