Trails

Once you’ve secured your Sanibel Island bike rental, which trails should you start exploring? For nature lovers, head to the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The four-mile Wildlife Drive Loop is open every day except Friday and costs just $1 per person. You’ll get to bike through the incredible scenery and spot stunning Sanibel wildlife like alligators, birds, marine life, and more.

If you want to pick up a unique seashell to remember your travels by, head to Sanibel Captiva Road. Cyclists are always welcome on this pass on the western part of the island. Ride along the road is the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, where you can learn about the seashells and check out the most intriguing varieties. Then, stop on the shore to pick one up for yourself!

Want to see the sights but avoid the crowds? Periwinkle Way provides the ideal combination. It’s far away from the average tourist strip but still offers quaint shops and restaurants for you to explore. There’s plenty of bike-friendly parking, and the bike path is separated from the street, so you’ll be safe and comfortable for your entire ride.

Is there a history buff in your group? Be sure to bike down Middle Gulf Cemetery Bike Trail. Head to Algiers Lane and take the bike path that heads into a wooded area to reach the cemetery. You’ll see just 26 unique internments here, including a few graves of some of the island’s original settlers!

Tips

While you’re biking to and from your Sanibel Island condo rentals, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you need a trail map you can get one at the Sanibel-Captiva Island Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center. Before you head out, make sure you grab a hat and sunglasses to keep you cool. You’ll also want to bring a bottle of water to make sure you don’t get dehydrated.

Helmets are required for riders 16 and under, but they are recommended for everyone. While you’re on the road, obey all traffic laws and ride in a single-file line. Finally, keep in mind that bikes are not allowed on the beaches of Sanibel Island. Once you’ve seen the entire island from the convenience of your bike, head back to one of our Sanibel Island beachfront rentals for a relaxing evening with the ones you love most.
