Luminary Lights Up the Islands!

This year marks the 33rd year for the Luminary Festival and it is a much-loved holiday tradition on Sanibel and Captiva Islands.

One of the most beautiful nights on Sanibel is coming up soon. At the annual Luminary Festival, miles of sparkling candle lanterns line the bicycle path adjoining Periwinkle Way. Volunteers put out the candle lanterns just before dusk.

The Festival is a much-anticipated event for the first weekend in December, and is the real start of the holiday season on Sanibel. Luminary on Sanibel will be observed on Friday, December 1^st, and then the festivities move to Captiva the following evening, Saturday, December 2^nd. The festival runs from 5:30 to 9:30 pm and involves all the merchants, restaurants and organizations along the way.

The event is hosted by the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce and the theme of this year’s event is Luminary Holiday Stroll. It is a community-wide holiday event that brings together residents, visitors, businesses and organizations, to promote goodwill and holiday spirit and to enjoy the season. Some Sandalfoot guests come year after year to enjoy the event.

As you “stroll the trail”, check out the Chamber-provided map for the many fun places to stop and enjoy. There will be Santa visits, photos with Santa, a live nativity scene, music and activities for the entire family.

The Chamber’s goal is to offer recognition to Island businesses and to encourage local shopping while providing a fun-filled evening for family and friends. Many Chamber merchants will show off their creatively decorated storefronts and feature holiday refreshments and celebrations.
