National Seashell Day, June 20th
The beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel have designated Monday June 20th as the 1st annual National Seashell Day. Sanibel and Captiva have always been known as shelling destinations, and a day in honor of the bounty of shells on the islands just seemed apropos. In the words of Tamara Pigott, executive director for the Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau, “as a destination renowned for world-class shelling, we are thrilled to officially declare June 20th as National Seashell Day. Our beautiful shells have long attracted writers, artists and innovators to our beaches for creative inspiration and a connection to nature. National Seashell Day is a celebration of the gifts from the sea that make The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel so special.”
The event is even gaining national attention. Chief meteorologist for ABC News, Ginger Zee, will be giving weather forecasts from Sanibel on June 20th for Good Morning America. It is also the perfect time to visit the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, the nation’s only museum dedicated to shells and the mollusks that create them. You can start out the day with a Beach walk led by Sanibel Sea School biologists, who will speak on basic bivalve and gastropod biology and why this area is such a shelling paradise.
