Historical Village and Twilight Talks

One of the most interesting sites to visit while on Sanibel is the Historical Museum and Village. Sanibel Historical Museum and Village was founded in 1984 with a mission to preserve and share Sanibel history. The story of Sanibel is told from the Calusa and Spanish eras to the early pioneer families who settled on the island in the 1800s. It tells of warriors, adventures, fishermen, farmers and proprietors.

Historic Sanibel buildings have been moved from their original island sites to the Historical Village. Each building has been restored to its original state and volunteer docents share the stories of Sanibel with almost 10,000 visitors a year. Buildings include the Caretaker’s Cottage (1925), Shore Haven (1924), Sanibel Schoolhouse (1896), Rutland House (1913), Sanibel Packing House (1900), Post Office (1926), Burnap Cottage (1898), Miss Charlotta’s Tea Room (1926), Old Bailey General Store (1927) and Morning Glories Cottage (1927).

Historical Village hours from mid-October to April are Tuesday to Saturday 10 – 4. From May to July, they are open the same days 10 –1. Admission is $10.00 for adults 18 and over. Children are admitted free-of-charge.

The Historical Museum also hosts Twilight Talks during season, presented at the Community House. Two talks are scheduled for the spring, March 20th, Sanibel Restaurants of Yesteryear, and April 11, 55 Years After the Causeway. Both Twilight Talks begin at 7:00 pm; tickets are $10.00 for each talk. Tickets must be paid for and picked up before each event. To order tickets, call 239-472-4648 or email info@sanibel-museum.org.
