F.I.S.H. of SanCap – A Local Non-Profit Helps Make Sanibel and Captiva Special

Anyone who has travelled to Sanibel or Captiva knows that the islands are a special place. Not only are the beaches beautiful and the wildlife interesting, it is also the people who make these islands so inviting. One organization that exists to improve the lives of residents and visitors, is F.I.S.H. of SanCap. The acronym stands for Food Programs; Island-Based; Social Services; and Helping Hands, and this organization does all of this and more.

The F.I.S.H. mission is “neighbors helping neighbors” and for over thirty years has been helping both residents and visitors. The organization began informally with Sanibel residents helping their neighbors. It has since evolved into a full-service social services agency offering different programs, services and workshops, and is a recognized United Way Partner Agency. With a team of full-time social workers, administrative services and volunteers, F.I.S.H. is now an integral part of island life.

Among the many programs that the organization offers are monthly “friendly faces” luncheons, in conjunction with George and Wendy’s Seafood Grille, hot meal delivery, food pantry, transportation, medical appointment transportation, visitation and computer distribution. For visitors, an essential service is the loan of non-electrical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers or canes, to aid in mobility for Sanibel and Captiva visitors.

Workshops cover a range of topics, such as money management, nutrition, health and wellness, and hurricane preparedness. F.I.S.H. is able to offer its many programs through the generosity of donors, and two fundraising events held annually, a gala in the spring and a 10K race in the fall.
