Eco-Friendly Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island is located off the west coast of Florida, but it feels like you are in a different world from the mainland, with palm trees, shell-strewn white sand beaches, and mangroves that remain protected from development. Originally settled by Calusa Indians who used the wealth of conch and shellfish on the island for food and tools, Sanibel Island is a low-key, eco-friendly sanctuary island and the residents ensure it stays that way.  The Sanibel Lighthouse on the east end of the island dates back to 1884.  There are more than 6,000-acres of national wildlife refuge stretching across the northeast side.  In 1974, after the construction of a bridge to and from the mainland, local government passed a land-use act preserving much of the island’s natural scenery.

As a barrier island off the coast of Ft. Myers, Florida, Sanibel Island enjoys a quiet reputation as an alternative to the high-rise hotels and loud, throbbing beach clubs of other Florida beach destinations.  Indeed, the eastern side of the island is dominated by a wildlife refuge, making the island something of an eco-destination. These elements come together to make Sanibel Island a renowned family vacation destination for collecting sea shells,  fishing, boating, biking and canoeing all year round where sunshine and warm breezes are the norm.

Sanibel Sea School is dedicated to vibrantly teaching children and adults about marine ecosystems. Using the barrier island habitats of Sanibel and Captiva, they provide their students an opportunity to touch, feel, and understand their natural surroundings in a field setting.

Through their experiences, students develop an intimate bond with the ocean and its inhabitants, and gain an enhanced awareness of the tightly woven fabric of our global environment. Sanibel Sea School’s programs foster a sense of wonder in regards to the marine world, leaving participants eager to learn more and enthusiastic about practicing good ocean stewardship. Our programs cover all that encompasses marine ecosystems – animals, people, plants, land, ocean and weather.

Thanks to the nature of field education, Sanibel Sea School provides a rich ocean experience that will invigorate students for a lifetime of appreciation and responsibility. We offer transformative education – it’s more than an experience – It changes the way we live.
