Big Arts Dames at Sea

For those looking for an entertainment option while on Sanibel, consider the musical being staged at Big Arts Strauss Theatre, Dames at Sea. The musical runs through Saturday, April 7^th and shows begin at 7:30 pm. There is a performance every evening except Sunday. and there is one matinee scheduled for Wednesday, March 28 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $45 for adults, $5 for students and $5 for children.

Dames at Sea was a long running off-Broadway hit and brought stardom to Bernadette Peters and her first Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance. Dames at Sea is a campy musical based on the nostalgia of old Hollywood musicals of the 30’s. Ruby comes to New York determined to make it big on Broadway and become a star. Ruby gets a job in the chorus, but the show’s producer promptly informs the cast that the theater is being torn down and they must find a new venue for the show. Dick and Lucky, two sailors in port, persuade their captain to let the show be staged on the ship. While rehearsing aboard ship, the star becomes seasick and Ruby jumps into the lead role to save the day. Dames at Sea was selected as Best Musical of the Year by Time, Newsweek and the Outer Critics Circle.
