Culinary Delights at The Community House
The Community House here on Sanibel is still under renovation, but the historic public meeting place, operated by the nonprofit Sanibel Community Association (SCA), soon will reopen. Among the first activities to be hosted is the Second Annual Cooking with the Islands’ Stars event in late January. This is the signature fundraiser for the SCA’s Renovation Campaign funding this year’s comprehensive update and restoration of the 1927 Community House.
The 6 p.m. Jan. 28 event begins with appetizers supplied by eight of the Islands’ top restaurants. Then, four local family chefs will take the main stage to prepare their favorite dishes. The culinary delights will be auctioned off prior to sampling some decadent desserts prepared by Sanibel’s Kitchen Guild. Event proceeds benefit the Culinary Education Center at the Community House, which provides classes, children’s programs, demonstrations, and kitchen garden techniques.
The evening includes a multimedia presentation with the four family chefs sharing their stories, demonstrating how to prepare their signature dishes, and sharing recipes. Two prize winners will be selected: People’s Choice (dependent on attendee donations) and Judge’s Choice (three judges will taste and comment on each family chef’s cooking). The winning chefs will receive an opportunity to work in a well-known chef’s kitchen and be treated to gourmet meals in Fort Lauderdale.
Admission to the fundraiser event is $100, with a limited number of $200 VIP tickets available for priority seating and samples from the family chefs.
